HOW WILL IZZY GO IN HIS AFL DEBUT?

With the AFL season drawing closer, one of the most closely watched players of the season will be one with no experience. AFL and general sport fans will eagerly watch the progress of rugby league convert Israel Folau and his debut will be his most anticipated game of the season. We’re taking bets on his performance in that game and we have installed 0-8 disposals as the $1.45 favourite.

Like fellow rugby league convert Karmichael Hunt, Folau is likely to find the transition difficult at first as he adapts to the game (Hunt gathered five possessions on debut). Greater Western Sydney coach Kevin Sheedy has publicly earmarked Folau for a Round 1 debut, stating he will play him at every opportunity. However, Sheedy has also said Folau will play in the forward line. With limited ball expected to reach the new franchise’s forward 50 and the typical low possession rate of key forwards as it is, his possession count is likely to be low.

The benefit Folau has in comparison to Hunt is that he has had a year to learn the game at a lower level and away from the spotlight. He will also get the opportunity to brush up on his skills and adjust to AFL pace in the NAB Cup before his likely debut in Round 1. Folau has already demonstrated his tackling and high marking ability in the NRL, and with his 100-plus kilogram frame he is sure to make an impact. If you think he can find plenty of the ball and have 16+ disposals on debut then $10 is on offer.
