The Baron is still strutting about his $9 call on Angelo Mathews top scoring for Sri Lanka on Friday night, so he’s going to have another crack today. Virat Kholi has scored 594 runs on this tour, top-scoring six times in 14 innings. He’s been far and away the best of India’s batsmen and The Baron is backing him to be in the runs again today in Adelaide against Australia.
Kholi broke through in Adelaide for his maiden Test century but he was already an established star in the one-day game. He has eight centuries and 19 50s from 73 innings at the excellent average of 47 and is relishing the opportunity to come in first wicket down. At 23, he is the rising star in an ageing team, showing the way for fellow youngsters Rohit Sharma and Suresh Raina, both promising players.
Kholi is younger and better than both and with Sehwag struggling and Tendulkar not quite right he is the logical man. Captain MS Dohni could be the surprise and even Ravi Ashwin could come into contention if wickets fall as often and cheaply as they did in the Redbacks-Bushrangers Ryobi Cup match last week, but Kholi is the percentage bet says The Baron.
